In Memoriam

Memorial to the Daughters who Have Gone Away [1]

by Mamie Wynne Cox, Poet Laureate

Let silence reign a little while today
To honor those whose strivings now are stilled.
If marvels of Revealments they have found
God's promises of rest and peace fulfilled.

Bright, fragrant flowers let us place today,
Naming our Sainted Ones. And tapers light.
for those who gone away whose quest is done
Eternal Day has dawned, there is not night.

Soft, tender music let us bring today.
Dear, Southern songs they loved play once again.
Voices now mute whose tones were pure and clear
Echo in patriotic sweet refrain.

Could but a message come to us today
Of Wisdom's plan in which all men belong,
Disclosing holy wonders, it might bring
Triumphant hope voiced in an Angel-song.

Let us take comfort to our hearts today.
Time's quite, healing balm is always near.
Like those who faced their future brave and strong
May we meet vast Tomorrow without fear.

So let us lift our grateful eyes today
And look to north, to south, to east and west.
Beholding vistas of our cherished land
for which they strove' a South supremely blest.

The days of the years of my Pilgrimage have come to an end.
Thy Words have been my songs in the house of my Pilgrimage.
