MEETING - NEW MEETING PLACE: We have a new meeting place! Although the Lucy Hill Patterson Library has been a wonderful meeting place over the years, it was felt by the Society that a move for the monthly meeting would increase attendance as well as provide additional time for meetings. In the future, we will be meeting at the NBC Bank Community Room. The bank is directly across the street from the library. The entrance is from the back and a convenient parking lot is only across the alley. In the future, we will be able to have refreshments, coffee or even pot luck treats if we desire. This change is for our meetings only and will not involve our mailing address or our association with the library in anyway.
NEXT MEETING: August 1st, program to be announced. John Cook has scheduled, Ken Fette, a guest the speaker for the Sept. 5th meeting. Mr. Fette is the Microfilm Coordinator from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
ANNUAL MEETING: The MCGS will have the Annual Dinner and guest speaking at the Oct. 3rd meeting. The Lee County Genealogical Society will participate with us in this project. The Patterson Civic Center has been reserved for that time and the speaker is still being sought. All committee heads will be the same as last year. There will be more to come on this in the next newsletter.
NEW MEMBER: Venetia Beckhusen, P. O. Box 157, Buckholts, Texas 76518
MEMBER OF THE MONTH: Each month, we will have a short article on one of our members with information on their community activities as well as some of their family history. We will also list the surnames they are researching.
Peggy Skinner Wright is the Treasurer & Publicity Chairman for our Society. She was born in Rockdale to Archie Carl Skinner and Ludie Grace Hillin. Her father was born in Black Jack, Burleson County and was a barber for many years in Rockdale. Her mother was born in New Salem. Peggy is married to Joe Wright and they live off Highway 77 at the edge of Rockdale. She is a member of the Rockdale Chamber Alliance, Linwood Acres Garden Club, Lee County Genealogical Society and the Milam County Court-house Restoration Project. She also worked on the successful Rockdale Expo this year. The surnames she researchers are: Wright, Oats, Skinner, Watson, Hillin & Driggers.
QUERY: Ann Seibert Currey, 8511 Charing Cross Ln, Dallas, Texas 75238-3807 - She is interested to know if Rockdale has any old city directories. She wanted to establish the date her grandfather John (Johan) Seibert moved to Rockdale. He had a lumber yard in Rockdale at one time. Bill McDaniel met Mrs. Currey at a reunion recently and is working on this query.
QUERY: Sunny Mayfield Allcorn, Rt. 1, Box 403A, Buchanan Dam, Texas 78609 - She is a member of Kingsland & Hamilton County Genealogy societies. She enclosed her ancestor tree and a descendant tree. She asks for any of our membership who might be searching the Pruett, Keel, Mayfield or Davidson families. William Davidson and his wife, Louisa Hooser Davidson both died on July 5, 1896. Their daughter was Emily Jane Davidson who married Stephen Cornelius Mayfield. Emily died on May 13, 1900 in Belton and was buried in Val Verde, Texas. All were born in Missouri but William might have been born in Tennessee.
NOTES: Nancy Perry of Lee County Genealogical Society reports their regular meeting will be August 19th at 9 a.m. at the Rufus King Library in Giddings with a local member to share the story of her recent trip of Ellis Island.
