Meetings: 7:30 p.m., 1st Thursday of each month at the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library

At our August meeting our speaker was Velmalene von Gonton Williams who recounted her adventures in genealogy which led to the publication of A von Gonten Family History: 1655-1994. The book is now in the library as a gift from Mary Joy Timmerman Graham. The book is very impressive in terms of quality and number of photographs and documents to support the research. Mrs. Williams’ adventures in adventures in assembling the book sounded almost like a fairy tale to someone (me) who has not had such good fortune in tracking ancestors. I am sure many Milam County residents will find the research helpful, interesting and impressive.

QUERY: Linda Critchfield, 7020 Firmament Ave., Van Nuys, CA 91406 - Would like to correspond with anyone researching the CRITCHFIELD family. Charles Sherman CRITCHFIELD, (b. 1865 - d. 1933) who married Lillie Bell WHITE in 1887. Both born in Jackson Co., IN. Their children: Alta Blanche WEEKLY, Olga DeWITT, Howard, Glen D., Jacob L., Laura WARD, Chester, and Mary BOWLING. The family moved from Indiana ca. 1887 and went first to Nebraska and then to Barry Co., MO and finally to Milam Co.

QUERY: Ellen M. Crawford, 9749 E. 5th St., Tucson, AZ 85748 - She would like someone to do research for her in Milam Co. She is interested in Elzie CATER who was killed in an argument about a school board election ca. 1878. When she inquired at the courthouse, she was told all records burned in 1874.

Speaker for Sept 7th meeting will be about the Towery Family History.

The next meeting will be our annual dinner meeting on Oct. 12th at the Patterson Civil Center, 609 Mill Ave., Rockdale. Our speaker will be Charles Hooverson. Marie Huber would appreciate any suggestions and help from members so as to have a repeat of last year’s success. Eugenia Newton who was so helpful last year will be unable to attend due to a conflict with her duties for the Milam County Historical Commission.

The Central Texas Genealogical meeting will be at the Bellmead Center on Sept. 9th. The speaker will be Lloyd D. Backstruch from the Dallas Public Library who will speak about Southern migration patterns and identifying maiden names of ancestors, substitutes for birth records. Admission is $25 at the door.
