Milam County Veteran Book

Missing in Action (MIA) - The Milam County Genealogical Society (MCGS) is currently seeking to locate a copy of the book "Men and Women in World War II from Milam County" published by the Edwin Hardy American Legion Post #9 circa 1946.

A copy was placed as a reference book at the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library in Rockdale, Texas; however, someone took it.

If you know of anyone who has a copy of the book and would be willing to donate it to the Milam County Genealogical Research Center at the Patterson Library, please contact: Charles Hubert, vice president of the MCGS, 1085 County Road 380, Milano, Texas 76556; telephone 512/446-3937 or e-mail < mhubert@swbell.net >.

The replacement book would be kept in a secure area with controlled access to insure it is not taken from the library.

Texas Baptist Historical Collection

The Texas Baptist Historical Collection exists to collect, preserve, and communicate the history of Baptists in Texas and to assist institutions, associations, churches, and individuals in understanding the impact that historical events have had on their past, present, and future.

Included in the collection is information on more than 2,000 Texas Baptist Churches as well as minutes from over 300 churches. Also included are copies of Texas Baptist newspapers, histories of many Texas Baptist churches, missionary files and records, etc.

Most importantly, Texas Baptist congregations may choose to have their records and minutes microfilmed for preservation by the Collection at no cost to the church. For a nominal fee the church may decide to purchase a copy of the microfilm at any time after the initial filming.

Every Baptist Church in Texas should immediately take advantage of this opportunity!

The Collection staff is available to conduct workshops on compiling a church history and preserving church records. The staff is also ready to serve as consultants for churches that are creating an archives, to serve as advisors to history/heritage committees in churches, and to conduct "Heritage Weekends" for churches highlighting the history of Texas Baptists.

For a listing of church minutes on microfiche and that are available for purchase, visit: http://www.bgct.org/bgctroot/tbhc/minutes.htm. Currently, two churches in Milam County are available: Little River Baptist Church in the Jones Prairie (1849-1995) and Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Rockdale (1872-1992).

The website also has forms you can complete to prepare a biography of church members as well as a Church History Survey as well as free on-line booklets, How to Observe Church Anniversaries, How to Write a Church History, How to Start a Church Archives, How to Prepare Oral Histories and much more. Even if you are a member of a different faith the booklets, can be a guide for undertaking a historical project for your congregation!

For more information, you can write: Texas Baptist Historical Collection, 4144 N. Central Expressway, Suite 110, Dallas, Texas 75204; telephone: 972/331-2235; e-mail < lefever@bgct.org > or visit their website at: http://www.bgct.org/bgctroot/tbhc/.

In this column, I will be glad to highlight and review any family history, genealogy, county history, or similar book, free of charge, if you donate a copy of the book or item. After it has been highlighted and reviewed, on a space available basis, it will be donated to the genealogy section of a library. You will receive an acknowledgment of the donation from the library. Mail item or book to me at the below address.
